Again?? Or am I losing my mind? Which wouldn't surprise me - I was up until 2 am reading - not good for someone that needs 8 full hours of sleep!!!!
Anyway, Rick - I was reading Hour of Gold, Hour of Lead. Lots of info in there regarding the 2 babies and names. It's been a long time since I read that (and only skimmed last night). Anne talks, in letters to her MIL, about how if the first one was a girl it would be Anne and if it was a boy, "That's been decided from the first: just exactly the same." That would most likely mean CAL, Jr. I wondered if she said "exactly" because of the slight difference between CAL's fathers name and his. There's also a lot of talk of clandestine communications surrounding Charlie's birth, which is probably one of the reasons that I'm so convinced that the Lindberghs were adamant about the press not finding out!
I also had forgotten about the delay in naming Jon before you mentioned it. I didn't know you could even file a birth cert. with no name. But in the book, they seemed to be unsure of what they wanted to call him and she talks about that, too. The poor kid went from August 16th to October 15th without a name! Rich people are so-o-o-o weird! Anne tells her MIL they found the name in a Scananavian history book (and she talks about it being a nickname for Jonathan, Mairi!!). CAL seemed happy that it was a phonetic spelling!! They had briefly considered Carl, but it was too close to Charles. I don't know how anyone can read these diaries (especially this one!) and think that they may have been involved in the kidnapping. And the way she talks about CAL, you can tell that she really loved him!! And he does some loving things, too that I didn't remember reading (holding her hand while she was sleeping during labor with Jon).
If you haven't read them, you might want to try at least HoG,HoL!
