Hello Angels/ get your study guide from Mark ASAP. I got mine yesterday/ in was included the Abraham Samuelsohn files...one or two big ticket items:
1.A tool and die maker from Long Island (Fred Smyder) seems to ID: Condon and Al Riech (or Ralph Hacker) the bodyguard "in Samuelsohs shop on 25 February 1932!!! All four of them are examining the Lindbergh Ladder right there on the floor waiting for pickup. Woo woo/ that was a well kept secret huh?
2. Samuelsons descriptions of the woman with BRH: 24; 5'6". White/ American/ very neat dressed/ nice appearance/ Black Hudson seal coat w/ grey collar/ small black felt hat. So who is this? Gerta Henkel/ Anna/ Edna Sharpe? Oh yes/ fair complexion and brunette hair. Ill bet we have her photo somewhere?
3. AS's descrptions of the two ladder pickup men: #1,,,skinny fellow, 5'6", 125-130 lbs., white, fair complexion, black hair, bleu serge suite and felt hat. and...'a chain with a college emblem"? Spoke very good english/ and was a good drawer, likely worked for an architect or draughtsman? Who is this? [glow=red,2,300]Fisch/ [/glow]Dwight Morrow Jr/ Ralph Hacker?
#2,,,5'6", 150-160 lbs, very dark complexion, black hair, navy blue overcoate and dark felt hat? Carl Henkel/ or ....well, clearly NOT Condon and Reich huh? Big surprize. Charlie the Pie man Schelsser?

I keep meaning to contact mark and forgetting! Would the "American" part of the description eliminate Anna and Gerta (assuming Gerta also has a German accent)?? Hey - can I be Jill Monroe? ?? <wink>

Done!!!! How long did it take for yours, Rick?
Also meant to add - do we have an accurate description of Violet Sharpe? Could it have been her AS was describing or is the timing off?? (I have no concept of when this all took place in relation to the rest of the crime incidents.)

Hi Mouse....I dunno, about 10 days or so?
good point on the Woman Accompaning BRH to Samuelsons Shop/:
Sure, lets throw Violet Sharpe in too? i am counting on all youse to "figure out whom she were"? We likely have her photo at one place or another/ One rumor is that AS said she returned to Germany or Europa shortly after the kidnap? Who knows whos telling the truth, if any, after 75 years.
I think the operative date for the ordering of the ladder with BRH and fancy dressed woman is on or about 20 Feb 1932!

Hi Rick~ Uh Whoa!! Guide to Lindberg Case!! Is this verging on a breakthrough? Don't want to go off the deep end here, but it does seem amazing. By the by ["in Samuelsohn's shop 25 March 1932"] 25 March or did you mean 25 Feb? Where in the world was Mr Smyder all that time??? Was he threatened, too? Had been trying to plumb some board topics more closely. Was seeking out the Duane Baker and Nosovitsky characters you had spoken of. Have lost where I read something about Baker having a wife or girlfriend who disappeared and Baker disappeared at a suspicious time. Wonder if this woman would fit the AS description? Wish we had some photos of some of these people! Guess I'd best read and ponder on this some more.

Hi Mairi/ you get an exalt for catching the wrong month. Yes--Fred Smyder says its 25 February 1932!!! Just 3 days after BRh and mystery woman order the ladder wood!
I havent the foggiest idea why Smyder and Samuelson dont get a fair hearing or testify in Court? both of them stay well below the radar as long as only Reilly and Wilitz know they exist? Well AS was in the NYTimes too? Lets just say neither prosecution or defense wants them/ Apparently, Gov. Hoffman's gumshoes track them down in an effort to save BRH from the gallows in 1936! At one point Hoffman meets with Abraham Samuelson at the New York Hotel in Jan 1936 for a face to face?
Duane Charles Baker with the bulging eyes should be kept on line for all IDs. But hes not a young man I dont tink? Samuelsohn says in one of his depositions that Ralph Hacker, Condons son-in-law works for an architect and is good at drawings!!! DYBT? Well, hes a good candidate too, but Ive never seen his photo anywheres.

Maybe Myra Hacker or even Betty Gow could be BRHs date for Samuelsohns Shop? See Betty Gows photo with the grey fancy coat and pill box hat after page 161 in Scapegoat???
So many women/ only one Charlie? But AMerican should narrow it down? BUT then Why would an American return to Europe or Germany? Do these folks ever tell the Truth??? DYBT?

What do we have here? Is it 3visits to AS with "the wood" involved?
1st- BRH/woman orders an amt of wood cut which exceeds that needed for "the ladder", leaves specs of some sort. (Something makes me wonder if this may have been mistaken ID).
2nd- who may have been JFC and Reich are in shop 25 Feb. a salesman happens to be there and points out wood with which to demo his clamps. What connection does JFC/Reich have with what may be "the wood". So far I can't see anything, unless they were still there when pick-up men arrived(?)
3rd- two men come to pick up "the wood"--was that also 25 Feb? Something is found to be wrong with the order- AS redoes it with directions of a good "drawer". (Hacker, JFC's son-in-law is probably a good "drawer").
AS fears for his life until BRH is arrested and at some point he comes forward-feeling safer? Then what of the 2 unaccounted for pickup men? Would they not have caused AS to be afraid i.e. part of the gang is still on the loose?
What am I missing (besides a lot!)?

No, Reilly didn't want Smyder as a witness, since he (Reilly) was never there to defend BRH in the first place.

Yes mairi/ you are getting ever so close/ the timeline is closer to.........
Visit #1 20 February 1932/ BRH lookalike and mystery woman drop off the order for wood
Visit #2 23 February 1932/ two men to check the measurments
Visit #3 25 February 1932/ two men come back plus Fred Smyder on "pick up day" [Condon lookalike reminds him of his dad?]
Well, thats a good question. Since he and Condon are olde friends and go back a ways maybe he figures that Condon wont have him killed? We are all just guessing here? And this is all BEFORE the kidnap! According to Freds deposition, the ladder was laying right there on the floor for all to see? But according to AS these are not the two skinny short guys comig to pick up the ladder wood? Its just a coincidence I suppose/
Also correct, DHReilly was representing Randolph Hearst News for $25K bucks!

I got mine yesterday and didn't have a chance to open it! Can't wait to see what kind of goodies Mark put in there. So, is everyone on vacation, or what? ? It's been very quiet here lately.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else, but I've just been plain busy. This week especially! We tore our downstairs apart this past weekend in preparation for shampooing the carpet before the new sofa came. Then, in the midst of trying to put everything back, I ended up going to my daughter's yesterday to cook, clean and help her care for her 4 month old while she tried to recuperate from a viral infection. Today she was up to go to the doctor's, so I "kept the baby company". I think I spend more time with my kid now than I did the last few years she lived here! And in the midst of all that, I went to 2 really good Celtic music concerts! Tonight I've promised myself that I'm going to hunker down and look over Mark's stuff!!! And I now have company to visit the NJSP museum - my daughter has expressed an interest. So I now have that on my "Things To Do" list!

Hi back!~ Mouse, you've really been at it!! I don't want to help shampoo carpets or catch a virus, but wish I could have gone to the Celtic music event with you. Also wish I could go to the NJSP museum! I live too far away though. I hope your daughter is feeling much better and the we'en didn't catch anything. I wrote for the overview of the LKC and look forward to reading it. Anne~did you get a copy? Rita~just ignore the IRS. They're naught but a nuisance!! Sounds as if you could stand them on their head, though! I see on the MM board they're still working over the "ladder". 'Tis a wonder there's so much as a splinter left of that contraption!!

Hi Mairi I don't know how they could have admitted that ladder as evidence as it was obviously made from pieces of wood from various sources, as if it was re-arranged with a piece or two from Hauptman to prove their case. :DThe Pinocchios from other forums seem to only get longer stories instead of Pinocchio's longer nose fate ;D.

Hi, Mairi. What is the overview of the LKC? No, I don't have a copy. I did get "A Talent to Deceive" and have had time for only the first few pages. The ladder in this case is interesting because it was so obviously a mishmash of parts. How could the judge allow such an obvious patchwork quilt as this ladder as evidence in such a serious trial? anne50

Hi Anne~ I meant Mark Falzini's Guide to the Lindberg Case. Sorry if I confused matters by calling it an "overview". Did you order a copy? It should be interesting. Hope you are enjoying your book. Rita/Anne~ I guess the ladder was the only thing the police had to try to tie BRH to the NJ kidnap. As I mentioned I do feel the ladder rail/attic board was falsified~see Bornman~. Otherwise they only had the gold certs attached to BRH. As we all know Police (and public) were desperate for a fall guy and weren't hesitant about any kind of "patchwork" they could conjure up.

<hi Angesl- <im currently cruising the <norway fijords between Tromso to Bodo. Big boat- 9 floors.
Did you notice how quickly <mms borard dropped the discussion of susancandys grandfather AS.? If about 20% of what he claimed was true, along with the statement that Rail 16 was a "joke"--well then her book will blow the lid off the famous wood evidence.
Evidence grows daily that CAL was far more involved in Charlies absence than BRH? Unless of course CAL hired those that made Charlie dissappear--maybe for good reasons? <like death threats. CAL was essentially MIA all day Tuesday March 1st 1932 and was never required to account for his time. Like maybe coming home twice, once in afternoon and once early evening after Charlie was already gone? There is precious little proof from anyone we can believe that Charlie was even there on tuesday.
All the cars in the neighborhood seen by Ben <lupica(6pm), the Conovers on featherbed road and the car speeding South from <highfields by the <moore family minutes (8:20)before CAL drive s in and toots the horne suggest that hes in on something? Then later on at 9:15 only CAL hears the ladder break? DYBT?

<hi Angesl- <im currently cruising the <norway fijords between Tromso to Bodo. Big boat- 9 floors. I'm afraid what I DON'T believe is that you're on a cruise and still surfing the 'net!!!!! What are you, nuts? ? I've cruised twice (tho' only in the Caribbean) and used the 'net each time - the first time because I won 100 minutes in the internet cafe and there was a blizzard approaching our hometown and we wanted to be in touch. The second because our only chil;d was due to deliver her baby the next month! Other than that I probably would have passed. So, how's the weather where you are, Rick?

Don't know which category to put this- but this seems the closest. Does anyone know of one VALID reason for not doing DNA on the ransom note envelopes? (It's crossed my mind to wonder if it actually [albeit secretly] has been done). I can make guesses at why the NJ powers that be wouldn't want to (risk that). Is blocking it backed by a law? Or by discretionary power? Any thoughts appreciated.

Hi Mairi They are probably afraid that it might match one of the influntial bootleg gang from Marthas Vinyard that Lindberg was bucking against. I believe they are breaking the law of most states by destroying evidence, but law can be manipulated by special provisions in that particular state as loopholes to protect special interests.
