I am reading...."Why I am still investigating the Lindbergh CAse" by Evalyn Walsh mcClean and Alan Hynd in Liberty Magazine 1938. As with all aritlces there are a few perls of wisdom:
In installment 7, Means tries to arrange a complex swap of Walshes $100,00 dollars or ($35,000 of his own) for the "marked ransom money thrown over the wall in St. Raymonds Cemetary to CJ'?
Isnt this astounding? What contact did Means have with the JFC money and the gang in the bronx? the Underworld in Chicago.
Means claimed that the ransom money from Condon went to Chicago where it was "too hot to handle" and the gang wanted to launder it with the Walsh/Means money in DC. I sure hope you cann follow that? its unbeliveable. Dont kill the messenger.
At some fixed moment in time....it appears to me that all 3 gangs are connectied......CJ/ Bronx gang, Means and the Mexico Gang, and Curtis and the boat gang. Sure its improbable, but when you read Evalyns account thats what you get.
Were all 3 gangs contrived to maximize safety or moneys to split up or was the entire exercise just one big Con from start to finish? None of them ever proved they saw Charlie or ever had Charlie.

thats very interesting. from all the responses CAL had something made him pick those three to use in negotiations. maybe he just wanted to spread the wealth around? Either there was something there or CAL just happened to pick three crooks; he lost the money and didn't get the baby back.

If CAL can tapp into Evayn Walsh McCleans $104,000, well then he is $54,000 ahead? Hes effectivly laundered his own marked ransom money for Evalyns? Very clever? The real questiion is how cheap is CAL and how strapped is he for ready cash? Mony, mony, whos got the money? What makes me suspicious is that Means knows too much about Condon? Later on Evalyn, and her special detective Hicks, worked with Gov. Hoffman to commute BRHs sentence.

Rick, CAL said he would reimburse evalyn if the baby was returned. that was pretty safe!

Yes, you are right there. If CAL knows where Charlie is then he knows that EWM is never going to find him. CAL must revel in his role as the Wizard of Oz, pulling all the strings from behind the curtains. Poor little Dorothy travels all over the Yellow Brick Road looking for Charlie but hes not to be found anywheres? Where is Charlie and how does he find his way back to Hopewell?

I've thought that CAL enjoyed his role as super hero more than he pretended. As a child he was ignored and used by his parents. All this world wide adulation must have been soothing no matter how alien and uncomfortable. I have questions as to why he married Anne although i think i know.

Kathy...do you suspect that it was because Elizabeth had some congenital health problems. This would make her unsuitable to CAL for his Aryan Nation of perfection? I think Lizz had heart issues and thats why CAL worked with Alexis on the Heart Pump?

rick, i think there is every reason to think CAL first was interested in E. and his second choice would have been constance but she was too young. like the story of goldilocks and the three bears, too sick, too young, just right. some of the things they did have in common Cal knew about and others he didn't. he did know how wealthy they were but he didn't know about the mental illness, DWight jr's own dad wouldn't accept that. in his autobiography Cal talks about marriage as mating between two families or something like that. i think that is one reason he went on to have so many other children with german women, so his genes could be match with a more perfect "specimen" Cal had difficulties with his American children and i'm sure he thought that didn't come from my side of the family!

Kathy/ Dr. Dudley Schoefeld would have really accomplished something psycho-anal=izing CAL huh? Maybe we could help the case along by profilling CAL like the FBI does criminals...it might give us some leads. i have a feeling he was a Type A control freak. Rita thinks hes a colde Fisch. Does that include calculating? Type A's are often perfectionists. What kind of personality plays evil pranks or calls his son "IT"? Didnt he pour a drink on Anne once or was it visa-versa?

rick, in the days of Dr. Schoenfeld psychiatrists were still called "alienist" and they thought schizophrenia was caused by poor mothering. Also remember Schoenfeld thought RBH was schizophrenic and homosexual. he was completely off the mark so why the VDers still use his input is beyond me. i think a forensic pyschiatrist or profiler would have a great time with CAL. Rita is right, he fits characteristics of several personality disorders in the DSM if youd like i could look them up.

Gaston Means revisited: Reading Bern I discovered an interesting paragraph on page 92 which suggests that Gaston wasnt just minding his own business when Evalyn Walsh McClean called. Bern implies that Gaston was actively phishing for a way into the ransom negotiations in the LKC. Bern reports had brother Gaston initiating contact with Colonel Robert Guggenhiem that he had info about Charlie. Thus, very early on (March 2nd) we have 5 Colonels and a third, or forth "go-between" in the LKC between CAL and the kidnappers. Means just used a less public way to weasle his way into the dialoque than Jafsies later ad in the Bronx Home News. Means claims he just heard "something" in a NYC speakeasy. Means claimed to be a German spy in WWI and was a known forger? Gaston sure gets around? Nevertheless he never tried to forge the ransom note symbol. (that we know of?)

Rita/ this is a great reference! Its hard to believe another disbarred attorney getting into the Act as Alan Hynd reported. Whitikers chess experience would serve him well in a con of Evalyn Walsh McClean. I had forgotten that Means, like Ellis Parker ended up dying in prison.
Apparently, it was a big mistake to get involved in the lkc or say that you can return Charlie? Means was phishing around Wash DC to get access to CAL by 2 March 32.

Thanks Rick I am now tring to find hidden bits of information remaining on the internet. It sometimes takes hours to find stuff that has been miss-placed by internet search engines, and I hope to make the site more educational in time with such items.
Whitaker was the last person that could have had the McLean Money, and maybee even the gold certificates. The other possibility is that he was sharing the loot with CAL after he got out of jail.

Rita/ Whitikker got off with a slap on the wrist. Scamming for the Lindbergh Money was not a brilliant idea. If Gaston Means would have known Condon that well he should have been trying to copy the singnature. But it does indicate how quickly the sharks circle the blood. So far these gangs are batting 1000, none have Charlie or at least none alive. How do you wash out the sleeping suite on a boat>? At one point Condon gets angry when he hears that Means is asking $100,000 bucks. Professional jealosy?

Well, it would appear that there is in fact some connection between Gaston Mean inside knowledge and the Condon handover of ransom money in ST. Raymonds. Keep in mind that Gaston Means managed to get twice as much money as Jafsie inspite of the fact that CJ supposedly controlled the Symbol and the Sleeping Suite? ( the 3 S's?). But now we have to fold in the Thomas F. Rice letters trying to drum up an investigation as to WHY Gaston Means had prior knowledge of the LKC on 24 Feb 1932 at the Imperial Hotel either in Boston or NYC? I cant remember where the Hotel was then? Isnt is rather handy for Gaston Means to know about the kidnap one week early and then one week later act as the 6th Go-Between to bring Charlie on home again? There is a reason why Gaston Means was known as both clever and dangerous. witty04.proboards100.com/index.cgi?board=letter&action=display&thread=1169559748

I don't think Means would have risked all his Washington connections over something he couldn't finish . With inside information he already had he must have been sure of some kind of follow up solution, but became silenced instead. Could it be that these extortionist were trying to extort money from Lindbergh for silence over what realy happened, but Lindy got the military intelligence service to deal with them instead.
